Texas A&M University students Hunter Beal and Tyler James, participated in an intern program with NDS Construction of San Antonio during the summer semester, May through August, 2008.
After a brief training and orientation at the San Antonio corporate offices, the students were transferred to Orlando, Florida, to put their education and skills into action. Working under Project Managers David Turlington at the Noah’s Ark Self Storage Hoffner facility project, and Jeff Koebke at the Noah’s Ark Balboa and Noah’s Ark Rock Springs projects, the two assisted in a range of tasks. Overseeing subcontractors, discussing structural issues, addressing daily field reports, and assisting in office start-up, is a short-list of duties. “Basically, I acted as an assistant superintendent under Jim Byxbe and Steve Scarborough,” said Tyler. “I even walked around with Mike (Parham) conducting an investor tour like I knew what I was doing!” added Hunter.
For Beal, the internship position came about when he asked to interview Mike Parham for a project that Beal had been assigned in a management class. Parham is the founder of the Parham Group and founder and CEO of NDS Construction, a Parham Group company. “During the course of the meeting, Mr. Parham agreed to interview me for the internship,” said Hunter. Hunter Beal, from Abilene, Texas, is majoring in Agricultural Leadership and Education; ALED. Tyler James met the Parham’s daughter in a study group at A&M. “In conversation, I told Rachel that after graduation, I wanted to work in land development. She told me that her parents were in that field. Things just progressed from there.” Tyler will receive his degree in Rangeland and Ecology and Management, and hails from Plainview, Texas. Both have returned to their classes in College Station and will graduate in December of 2008.
The Parham Group is a group of five companies specializing in every aspect of self storage investment, development, design, construction, management, and consulting. During their tenure with NDS, the interns had the opportunity to interface with most of the Parham Group companies; Noah’s Ark Development, VP of Operations Maurice Ferrell at Cross Metal Buildings and Ann Parham, president and Angie Kleinschmidt, vice president of operations at Joshua Management, as well a number of other subcontractors. Janus International provided roll-up doors; the gate and security vendor was Digitech International; and Schindler Elevators, to name only a few.
“The quality of work that both of the interns exhibited during the summer was extremely above average and was characterized by the highest ethics and work energy that I’ve seen,” said Mike Parham. “Both of the gentlemen are a fine example of the quality education received at Texas A&M. They will make a great addition to the NDS Construction team.” For information concerning NDS Construction, visit www.ndsinc.com, or call 888-980-8250.
